Cercis canadensis – Eastern Redbud

The Eastern Redbud, native to Florida, is a small to medium size tree that prefers full sunlight to light shade.  Growing between 20 to 30 feet in height, the Redbud produces rosy-pink flowers with a purplish tinge between March and April.  Preferring moist, well-drained, deep soils, the Redbud is available in a wide variety of specimens including the Forest Pansy, Flame, Pinkbud, Royal White, Rubeye Atkinson, Silver Cloud and Wither’s Pink Charm.  Also known as the Judas tree, the Redbud attracts a wide variety of butterflies such as the brown elfin, dreamy duskywing, dusky azure, eastern pine elfin, gray hairstreak, silvery blue, and the zebra swallow tail.  Belonging to the Leguminosae family, the Redbud is susceptible to borers, scale insects, web worms, canker and verticillium.
